Making Friends as an Adult
Making friends as an adult can feel hard, while at the same time it is something we need more and more. While we may feel more and more lonely, we also understand the myriad health benefits of friendship formation. In this presentation we walk through the importance of making friends and new ways to consider what makes a friend. Then we move through a pathway anyone can use to help them with creating new friendships.
Things I Didn’t Learn in Training About Firearms
Gun violence is a major public health issue and the leading cause of death of children in the United States. In this talk we look at how the Dickey Amendment profoundly impacted the ability of American health care professionals ability to research and talk about gun violence. We consider secure firearm storage and how to speak with patients about it. Finally we look at the importance of normalizing discussions about secure firearm storage and the fact that our nation is not divided on this topic.
Tackling Climate Change, Our Apex Predator.
Climate change impacts every one of us and those impacts must launch us towards action. For Dr. Shapiro, it was the Tubbs wildfire in 2017. In this presentation we look at regional-specific impacts of climate change, how to connect with your teammates and colleagues around their safety, how to drive our organizations towards action, and ways we can not just understand but mitigate the profound health impacts of climate change.
Allyship in Action
Gender-based inequities are present and profoundly impactful structural inequities within healthcare and we all have an opportunity to drive towards progress. For those of us who identify as male, our allyship and advocacy in this work is essential. In this talk we define these topics, identify some skills we can embrace and hone to be better allies, and learn about how to be an upstander.
